(EDMONTON, AB): United Conservatives are calling on Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi to come clean on whether he and his party still support Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax, as well as a host of other devastating federal policies.
The Trudeau Liberals are becoming increasingly desperate and isolated in their support for a carbon tax that does nothing but make life more expensive while failing to reduce emissions. United Conservatives, along with the governments of New Brunswick, Ontario, and Saskatchewan have been at the forefront of the fight against the carbon tax and the harm it’s inflicting on families, energy workers, farmers, and job creators. The Alberta NDP, meanwhile, have a long history of supporting Trudeau’s carbon tax, even voting against a United Conservative motion condemning the punishing tax just last year.
“As the leader of Alberta’s Official Opposition, Mr. Nenshi has a responsibility to be transparent about his intentions,” Chief Government Whip Shane Getson said. “Does he stand with his Liberal friends in Ottawa for a discredited tax that harms our economy, or will he join the United Conservatives and fight for the hardworking people of our province? Albertans deserve to know.”
Support for Trudeau’s carbon tax is collapsing across the country. Manitoba NDP Premier Wab Kinew and B.C. NDP Premier David Eby oppose the carbon tax. The Saskatchewan NDP oppose the carbon tax. Ontario Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie broke from Trudeau to announce she will not support a carbon tax. Even Trudeau’s now informal coalition partner, federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, is finally admitting the carbon tax is a “burden” on working people.
Getson said he’s confident Nenshi wants to continue working with first longtime friend and ally Trudeau, pointing to a recent news story where Nenshi ducked a question on the carbon tax and said he wants to “seek a compromise with the federal government” over their energy production cap and clean electricity regulations.
“As Justin Trudeau stubbornly pushes forward with his disastrous policies, it is vital that Albertans know where the leader of the province’s official opposition stands on the critical issues affecting families and businesses,” Getson said. “It’s time for Mr. Nenshi to quit ducking the important questions and come clean with Albertans.”
