(EDMONTON, AB) November 27, 2024: It should come as no surprise to anyone that Trudeau’s choice, Naheed Nenshi and the Alberta NDP would rather cave to their bosses in Ottawa rather than fight for Albertans when it comes to the destructive Liberal-NDP oil and gas production cap.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault can always count on their favourite Calgary campaigner to sit down instead of stand up for the people of Alberta.
United Conservatives have been clear: The proposed production cap will result in production cuts of at least one million barrels a day of oil and gas in Alberta while devastating our economy. Multiple reports have also exposed this production cap as a job-killer- effectively killing over 150,000 jobs.
This is the most damaging federal policy since the National Energy program. Alberta needs to fight back, not fold as Nenshi wants.
“Once again, Naheed Nenshi is showing where his loyalty lies—firmly with his bosses in Ottawa, rather than standing up for Albertans,” said Chief Government Whip Shane Getson. “Nenshi’s defense of a jobs-killing and unconstitutional emissions cap is an insult to the energy workers who drive our province’s prosperity.”
Unlike the NDP, Premier Danielle Smith and United Conservatives are taking strong actions to protect Alberta’s the livelihoods of all Albertans. We will work to maximize the value of every barrel of oil to benefit Alberta taxpayers, because Alberta natural resources, belong to Albertans not Ottawa.
By proposing a motion under the Alberta Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act, United Conservatives will introduce measures to shield the province’s economy and prosperity from this unconstitutional federal policy. This includes launching a constitutional challenge if or when the federal production cap becomes law.
The proposed motion includes exploring additional actions such as non-enforcement of the cap and protection under the Critical Infrastructure Defence Act. The motion also outlines steps to sell conventional oil through the Conventional Oil Royalty-in-Kind program and work collaboratively with industry to implement a Bitumen Royalty-in-Kind program for bitumen, and develop a similar program for natural gas, if necessary.
Nenshi however, just wants to go along to get along, that’s his plan…even if it means leading our province into economic and societal decline. Nenshi just doesn’t care about the effects this production cap has on the people he was elected to serve; he doesn’t even care enough to run for a seat in the Legislature.
The NDP’s insistence on defending Ottawa’s eco-radical agenda — opened the door for Ottawa’s damaging production limits—and shows their complete disregard for Albertans.
The far-left Alberta NDP under Naheed Nenshi will never stand up to Ottawa’s activist agenda to shut down fossil fuels, instead, they will work alongside them.
