Nenshi’s reckless border security comments

(EDMONTON, AB) December 17, 2024– United Conservatives are deeply concerned by Naheed Nenshi’s dismissive remarks opposing enhanced border security measures and downplaying the severity of the illegal drugs crisis that threatens the lives of Albertans and Americans. His suggestion that Alberta should not advocate for its own interests and his implied support for retaliatory measures over securing our borders are both irresponsible and dangerous.

“It’s shocking to hear the leader of the NDP dismiss the threat posed by illegal drugs like fentanyl and suggest that securing our border is somehow unnecessary, it just goes to show how out of touch he really is on provincial, and international matters “said Chief Government Whip Shane Getson, “Protecting Albertans is not optional. It’s our responsibility, it’s our duty”

United Conservatives have been firm that under no circumstances will Alberta agree to cut our oil and gas exports and that we will not tolerate any retaliatory measures by the federal government that would do so. It is extremely concerning that Naheed Nenshi would choose to support his friend and ally Justin Trudeau, at the expense of Albertans by suggesting that a retaliatory approach would serve anyone.

Further, Nenshi’s claim that 44 pounds of fentanyl – an amount capable of killing thousands of people – is “not a lot” demonstrates a disturbing disregard for the devastating impact of this deadly drug on communities across Alberta and the United States. The trafficking of fentanyl and other illegal substances is a crisis that requires urgent action, not dismissive rhetoric.

Mr. Getson added, “every ounce of fentanyl seized is a potential life saved. To imply that this amount is insignificant shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the potency of this drug, and of the crisis we’re facing in our country.   It has a devastating toll on families, communities, and our healthcare system”.

United Conservatives recently announced immediate and decisive action to curb illegal border activities and strengthen the nation’s border security. These new measures will immediately crack down on illegal migrants and drug trafficking across the shared Alberta – U.S. border.

While United Conservatives take bold steps to protect its borders and citizens, Naheed Nenshi, Trudeau’s choice for Alberta, continues to prioritize policies that harm Alberta’s economy and compromise public safety. Nenshi’s comments align more with Ottawa’s failed policies than with Alberta’s priorities, leaving Albertans questioning whose side he’s on.
