(EDMONTON, AB) March 19, 2025– United Conservatives are standing up for Albertans against the latest NDP proposal to hike taxes, which would take more money out of the pockets of hardworking families and businesses. Naheed Nenshi and the Alberta NDP are once again proving that they are more interested in growing government than growing the economy.
During a meeting of the Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship, NDP MLA Court Ellingson suggested that Alberta adopt British Columbia levels of taxation, which would include increasing taxes on Albertans by more than $20 billion, in particular a sales tax of 7 per cent.
“At a time when Albertans are already struggling with the rising cost of living, the last thing they need is an NDP tax hike,” said Chief Government Whip Shane Getson. “This is just more of the same failed approach we saw under the previous NDP government—raising taxes, driving out investment, and making life more expensive.”
The NDP’s push for BC-style taxes, which includes a provincial sales tax and raising personal and business taxes, would be a direct hit to Alberta’s economy. When the NDP was last in government they brought in the carbon tax, they raised corporate taxes, costing Albertans billions of dollars and leading to an economic downturn that hurt everyday families.
“Unlike the NDP, United Conservatives believe in keeping taxes low and putting money back in Albertans’ pockets,” Getson added. “Budget 2025 delivers real relief, cutting taxes and saving families $1,500 and individuals $750. These savings put money back where it belongs—in the hands of Albertans—helping them afford everyday essentials, invest in their future, and grow our economy.”
United Conservatives remain committed to fiscal responsibility and economic growth. While Nenshi’s NDP focuses on tax hikes and reckless spending, United Conservatives will continue working to make Alberta the best place to live, work, and raise a family.
