The Honourable Ric McIver was first elected in 2012, and he was re-elected in 2015, 2019 and 2023, in the riding of Calgary-Hays, and since May 13th of 2025, has been the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.

Before entering public life, Speaker McIver worked extensively in the food industry, holding positions in sales, marketing, and management. He also owned a food distribution and marketing business.

In 1981 he moved to Alberta and has since been a long-time resident of Calgary. Following his private sector career, he served three terms on the Calgary City Council for Ward 12 from 2001-2010.

Since being elected to the Alberta Legislature in 2012, Speaker McIver has held several roles within Alberta’s Cabinet under both Progressive Conservative and United Conservative Governments. This includes as Minister of Municipal Affairs, Transportation, Infrastructure, Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour, and Deputy Government House Leader. As Minister of Transportation, McIver negotiated an agreement with the Tsuu T’ina Nation to complete Calgary’s Ring Road. He also brought the Calgary Flames and the City of Calgary together making the event centre possible.

Speaker McIver is married to his wife Christine, the founder and CEO of the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta. Together they have four children and grandchildren, all living in Calgary, where he remains active in charitable and community initiatives.
