Ms. Sawhney was first elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Calgary-North East on April 16, 2019 and was elected the Member for Calgary-North West on May 29, 2023.

Prior to entering politics, Sawhney obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Calgary. Sawhney’s professional career was defined by her work for more than 20 years in the oil and gas sectors, holding senior roles in economics and business development.

Since being elected to the Legislative Assembly, has served in numerous cabinet posts, including as Minister of Community and Social Services, Minister of Transportation, Minister of Trade, Immigration and Multiculturalism, Minister of Advanced Education, and since May of 2025, has served as Minister of Indigenous relations. Within this role Sawhney has worked on a wide variety of initiatives to support reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, such as housing, healthcare, education, and the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation.

As a lifelong Calgarian, Sawhney has been heavily involved in community service, and has been recognized with the Canada 150 Award for her work. Sawhney and her husband, along with their four children reside within Calgary, and in her spare time, Sawhney enjoys reading, writing, and sports, and speaks Punjabi and Hindi fluently
