Demetrios Nicolaides was first elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Calgary-Bow on April 16, 2019, and was re-elected on May 29th 2023.

From 2019 to 2023, he served as Alberta’s Minister of Advanced Education and in that role expanding post-secondary spaces and restructured apprenticeship education to promote skills for jobs. 

Following his re-election in 2023, Mr. Nicolaides was appointed Minister of Education & Childcare and in that role he provide created complexity teams, invested to reduce class sizes, launched the School Now program to build 130 new schools and implemented new literacy and numeracy screeners to ensure students have the strongest possible start.

In January 2026, Mr. Nicolaides summited Mount Kilimanjaro and raised $350,000 for FearIsNotLove to help support survivors of domestic violence. 

Mr. Nicolaides is an expert in conflict resolution, with advanced training in arbitration, accreditation as a mediator, and a PhD in the field. He also holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Calgary. A lifelong Calgarian, he lives in Calgary-Bow with his wife and five daughters.
