Mike Ellis was first elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Calgary-West on October 27, 2014 and was re-elected on May 5, 2015, April 16, 2019 and May 29, 2023.

Prior to entering public office, Ellis studied in the Bachelor of Policing Program at Charles Sturt University, and holds a management certificate from Mount Royal University, as well as a leadership certification from the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Ellis served for 12 years with the Calgary Police Service. His time as a member of the CPS focused heavily on engagement with vulnerable populations through the Alberta Secretariat for Action on Homelessness. In recognition of this service, Ellis received a 10-year distinguished service medal in 2013.

Since his election to the Legislative Assembly, Ellis has served as Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. As of October 2022 has served as Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services, and since June of 2023 has served as the Deputy Premier of Alberta.

A born and raised Calgarian, Ellis and his wife Hollie have three children, and regularly participate in their community
