NEWS RELEASE: Real Property Rights Committee submits final report

(EDMONTON, AB): The Real Property Rights Committee, chaired by Highwood MLA R.J. Sigurdson, has submitted its final report to the Legislature, which includes six proposed recommendations for strengthening property rights in Alberta.

“I am so proud of the work accomplished by this Committee, which was informed by the thoughts, opinions, experiences, and ideas of everyday Albertans,” Sigurdson said. “We traveled the province and met with Albertans in their home communities to get this right. These recommendations are a reflection of the voices we heard and the conversations we had.”

The Committee held several off-site meetings before developing its final report, including in Medicine Hat, St. Paul, Fort Macleod, Hanna, Edson, and Eckville to hear directly from Albertans concerned about property rights. Among other things, the final report recommends abolishing adverse possession, providing fair compensation to landowners, and exploring ways to constitutionally entrench Albertans’ property rights. The report has now been submitted to the Legislature for consideration.

“Albertans care deeply about property rights and brought many concerns to the table through this process,” Sigurdson said. “These recommendations will, if adopted, fix a variety of issues related to property rights in Alberta, and ensure we have the strongest property rights system in the entire country for generations to come.”
