Do you agree with this? Yes, the ATA needs more accountability and oversight. No, I trust the ATA to handle these matters. Not sure. The Students First Act will create a public online registry that shares the professional standing of all teachers and teacher leaders who have held a teaching certificate since 1954 and would include disciplinary details for suspended and cancelled certificates dating back to 1990. Do you agree with this? Yes, Alberta parents deserve to know! No, there is already a process in place to deal with teacher conduct issues. Not sure. The Students First Act will entrench the requirement for school authorities to conduct criminal record and vulnerable sector checks upon employing a teacher or teacher leader, and then every five years onwards while employed. Do you agree with this? Yes, this is important for safety reasons. No, I don’t think this is relevant. Not sure. The Students First Act will reduce the window for judicial review of disciplinary decisions from six months to 60 days. Do you agree with this? Yes, the faster you deal with inappropriate teachers the better. No, six months is an appropriate length of time. Not sure. The Students First Act will establish an expedited certificate cancellation process for teachers and teacher leaders convicted of a serious indictable offence under the Criminal Code.
