Nenshi’s NDP attacks Albertans’ right to free expression

(Edmonton, AB) August 22, 2025: United Conservatives are defending Albertans’ rights to gather peacefully on the Alberta Legislature grounds after Naheed Nenshi’s NDP launched pre-emptive partisan attacks on a lawful event taking place tonight.

“Alberta’s public spaces belong to Albertans,” said Deputy Government Whip Tany Yao. “United Conservatives believe the Legislature grounds should be open for peaceful assembly and expression, regardless of an individual’s religious or political beliefs.”

Unlike the NDP, United Conservatives recognize Albertans value the ability to attend free community events, and that attendance does not mean an endorsement of all the views expressed by performers or individual participants.

“The duty of government is to treat everyone fairly, not to decide which voices Albertans are allowed to hear,” added Yao. “The NDP only supports free speech when it suits their politics.”

United Conservatives have consistently supported the public’s right to host events of all kinds on the Legislature grounds, including March for Life, Pride and Transgender Day of Remembrance flag raisings, Chanukkah celebrations, a rally in support of Palestine, a ‘climate strike’ hosted by Greta Thunberg, and even an Enough is Enough rally of protestors vocally opposed to Alberta’s United Conservative government.
